Hokies Top Furman In Doubleheader

The Virginia Tech softball team took on Furman in two games Wednesday. After a sluggish start the Hokies got the bats rolling to win 3-1 and then 7-1.

Furman jumped out to an early lead, scoring an unearned run off of pitcher Angela Tincher in the third. The Hokies responded in the bottom of the inning when Caroline Stolle scored off of a Kelsey Hoffman single to left.

The game stayed tied at one until the bottom of the fifth when Stolle and Stephanie Savre hit back-to-back homeruns to make the score 3-1.

Tincher held off Furman for the last two innings and picked up her 30th win, tying the school record for wins in a season. She gave up six hits, walked four, and struck out 12.

The Hokies bats got hot in the second game, starting in the first when Erin Ota scored off of a sacrifice fly from Stolle.

Furman would answer in the second with a solo homerun and tie the game at one.

In the bottom of the second Whitney Davis and Jess Everhart both scored off of an Anna Zitt double to center. Zitt went on to eventually score off of a Callie Rhodes sacrifice fly, making the score 4-1.

In the fifth the Hokies added more runs to the scoreboard. Rhodes scored when she stole third and the throw down was wild and then pinch hitter Kelsy Rokey singled, scoring both Charisse Mariconda and Davis, making the final score 7-1.

Heather Lowry got the start on the mound and did an excellent job, going all seven innings. She gave up just one run off of four hits while walking one and striking out seven.

The Hokies next series will be an important one this weekend at Tech Softball Park against Boston College as Tech has a chance to clinch the ACC. The doubleheader on Saturday is set to start at noon, and then the single game on Sunday is at 1 p.m.
