The Wall: A Community in Grief

The old line is that journalism is the first draft of history. At Virginia Tech Monday, journalism became the first step in a community's long, bitter grieving process.
Forget all the stories, forget the media feeding frenzy, we at Virginia Tech face immense sorrow for our loss, for the senseless murder of our brothers and sisters. Monday brought the slaughter of innocents. Our innocents.
The sheer stupidity of it all will never make sense.
We are left with our anger and our grief. And a memory that will only burn deeper over the coming weeks.
In recognition of these heart-breaking circumstances, we at planetblacksburg.com offer the community a wall, a safe place to express whatever you feel in the aftermath of this unmitigated evil.
Please feel free to leave your comments below.

Posted by Flora and Tim | April 17, 2007 8:47 AMToday at 2:00 pm, the Virginia Tech community gathers together on their campus in Blacksburg to honor the memory of those tragically killed in yesterday's horrific violence and to comfort fellow students, colleagues, families and friends as they struggle with inconceivable grief and anguish.
At that hour, as an expression of respect and remembrance, the Connecticut State University System respectfully requests that students, faculty, and staff at Central, Eastern, Southern and Western Connecticut state universities pause briefly in our daily activities to observe a moment of silent reflection.
Although we are miles away in Connecticut, distance does not diminish the depth of our heartfelt sorrow for the people of Virginia Tech. The positive thoughts and, for those who choose, prayers, of our university community will hopefully serve to comfort each and every individual not only on this day, but through the difficult days ahead.

Sweet Dreams My Angel
Go to sleep my angel and dream
Of heavenly places and heavenly faces
You shall be missed, my angel but rest in peace
In this world you could easily get hurt
Don't fret my angel you are safe in God's arms
He will take care of you
And will always be with you
Mortal dreams of riches, but my angel
You are rich for eternal life
So sleep now angel you are full of love and beauty
We will all be with you soon
Sweet dreams my angel
When you wake up you'll know that
Your dreams have come true

My deepest sympathy to the victims of this horrible tragedy, both deceased and still fighting for their lives. I am appalled that the news networks have seized on the unnecessary twist that the school authorities should have notified the students sooner and they may have liability. When involved in a shocking incident that is just unfolding, it is impossible to think of all the things that "might" happen. I believe the authorities responded timely and accurately based on the information they had the time. It is easy to point the finger after the fact and I wonder how all these reporters, or anyone, would react in similar circumstances. After something like this, the reporters (and even politicians) rush in and in a feeding frenzy give false information and speculation. And the world watches like rubberneckers looking at a car accident. My heart goes out to the victims and their families and my prayers are with you.

Please try to find "omarion" who posted a comment on fark.com asking everyone to "pray for me, please" at 11.40.25 am yesterday morning. I'd like to make sure she's alright as no one responded to her at all and I got worried that she was in danger and all alone somewhere on campus.
I'll check fark.com later to see if it's been updated.
