Yankees Make Largest Donation to Tech’s Memorial Fund The New York Yankees presented Virginia Tech with a $1 million donation to the Hokie Spirit Memorial fund before their game against the Red Sox at Yankee Stadium on Wednesday night. It was the largest single donation the university has received for the memorial fund. Derek Jeter, captain of the Yankees, presented Virginia Tech president Dr. Charles Steger with the check in a pre-game ceremony. Steger was accompanied on the field by Vince Houston, captain of the Virginia Tech Police Department; Jason Dominczak and Matthew Johnson, members of the of the Virginia Tech Rescue Squad; and Jim Weaver, director of Virginia Tech athletics. Interview: Local Band, DecembeRadio, Gaining National Attention With a Grammy nomination, a Dove award, and named one of the top 10 artists to watch in 2006 by Billboard magazine, the band DecembeRadio from Blacksburg is causing a buzz in the music industry with its self-titled debut album. However, this success has not gone to the heads of the band members. Eric Miker, Josh Reedy, Brian Bunn and Boone Daughdrill are still just four friends who love to rock out together in their garage, which is where they sat down with Planet Blacksburg recently for an interview. Local author writes book about big dreams in Blacksburg ![]() Amongst pages of essays are carefully crafted stories that bring to life the feeling of the community that is Blacksburg. Krisha Chachra has written a collection of essays in the book, “Homecoming Journals: Dreaming Big in a Small Town.” The book consists of essays Chachra wrote for the Roanoke Times about experiences in Blacksburg. Other essays in the book include stories about growing up as a second generation Indian American, as well as coming home to Blacksburg. The book also features photography. Every fall, 66,233 maroon and orange clad fans filter into Lane Stadium to cheer on their beloved Hokies led by head coach Frank Beamer. Beamer currently ranks third among active Division I-A coaches in victories with 198 and has led the Hokies to 14 straight bowl appearances. Coach Beamer recently found time in his busy spring practice schedule to sit down with Planet Blacksburg and talk football. Scott Tarcy: A Golfing Inspiration Just recently, Planet Blacksburg talked with and documented a day in the life of one truly dedicated Virginia Tech athlete, Scott Tarcy. This is an individual who is beyond a doubt devoted to becoming the next big thing in professional golf. But the road to the pros is not an easy task for this golfer. This book will feature the voices of numerous students, faculty and others involved in the event. There has been no word on a rescheduling. ![]() After a fortnight of heartbreak, Virginia Tech's students have decided to take an evening to toast the good people of Blacksburg who have offered an outpouring of support and kindness to a grieving university. “Hokie Community Appreciation Night” will feature free ice cream and entertainment from various music and step groups.
