PHOTO BY KEVIN CUPPTemperatures hovering around 90 degrees did nothing to dampen the spirits of the Virginia Tech football team Friday during its charity car wash.
Fans lined up their cars as the entire roster of Hokie players plus nine assistant coaches and head coach Frank Beamer himself attacked not opposing lineman and blockers but dirty vehicles in the Tech softball/track parking lot. Splitting two shifts over two and a half hours, eight stations of six players and one coach washed 178 vehicles.
The car wash was free of charge but donations in any amount were accepted. Just over $4,000 was brought in from the event; all of which will go to benefit the Hokie Spirit Memorial Fund.
To date, people from across the country and around the world have donated over $7 million to the fund. Contributions are distributed according to donor preference across 34 funds including 32 named for the victims of the April 16th shooting, a general scholarship fund and a fund intended for overall support of the university community and the families of those involved.
Tech Tidbits
Saturday marks the final football scrimmage open to the public before the Hokies open their season at home Sept. 1st against East Carolina. Fans are encouraged to attend and will be allowed to sit in the north end zone seats in addition to the west side stands. Team stretching begins at 3:15 p.m. The actual scrimmage should last from roughly 3:45-5:15 p.m.
Two Tech freshman Tech football players, flanker Ervin Garner and offensive tackle Will Alvarez have been certified as qualifiers and cleared for full athletic competition by the NCAA Clearinghouse. Alvarez’ qualification could help ease the depth concerns along the offensive line.
