A Fourth Glorious Go-Around

Eve Ensler’s play, The Vagina Monologues showcased this past weekend at the Haymarket Theatre in Squires Student Center here at Virginia Tech for the fourth time. The entire theatre was packed with women and men equally excited to view the very talked about play on campus.

Before watching the show, I visited Christine Dennis, the faculty advisor of the V-Day initiative to get a better feel for the content of the show. She informed me of how hard the actresses had been working and that they were ready for the opening night.

When I asked Dennis about the message wanting to be sent out to the audience, she answered, “We want to educate people about the secrecy of women’s sexuality and also the assault that has happened to them. This is an open dialogue talking about what people normally don’t talk about.”

She was completely right. When the play was over, I was overwhelmed by what I had just watched and listened to. I learned so much about women then I thought I would ever be able to know even by being a woman myself. Although some topics were uncomfortable as I was told they might be, I thought the play was a success. The actresses were so well trained in portraying the people interviewed and had the whole audience laughing so loud, I could hardly hear myself think.

Although The Vagina Monologues made some viewers feel awkward because of the extreme reality and truth to the stories, it was an overall success by teaching the female viewers that they are not alone in life and that if they are thinking something, there is probably another woman somewhere thinking the same thing.
