SPJ To Host Job Fair For Student Journalists

Interested in a career in the media field? The Society of Professional Journalists will host its 7th annual Media Net career fair on Monday, Feb. 25 from 7 to 10 p.m. at the Graduate Life Center on Virginia Tech’s campus.

This year's Media Net will provide students from around the area the chance to obtain connections, available internships, and career opportunities. With this opportunity, professionals are available to answer any questions students have about a specific career and students are able to submit resumes for consideration.

 “This year’s Media Net is revised,” Elise Glaum, president of SPJ said. “We added more of a public relations aspect to it and a speaker to appeal to a more general audience.”

This year's event will be sponsored by The Roanoke Times' Big Lick U and will feature special guest speaker Michael Stowe, the managing editor for The Roanoke Times. The event will also be catered with free food to all visitors.

Some major companies that have previously attended include: The Roanoke Times, Education Media Company at Virginia Tech, Virginia Tech Career Services, Virginia Tech Sports Marketing Department, K92.3 Radio, Big Lick U, ESPN Radio (Roanoke), Planet Blacksburg, WDBJ Channel 7 (Roanoke CBS affiliate), WSLS Channel 10 (Roanoke NBC affiliate), and so many more.

This is a great event for anyone looking for more insight into the demands of the workforce and future career possibilities in broadcast, print, radio and public relations.

“It’s a great year especially for freshman students to come out,” Glaum said. “We have a woman from Career Services who will be there to look at resumes and help lead younger undergraduate students in the right direction.”

The event is also open to any students from Radford University, Hollins University, and Roanoke College.
