“For the Bible Tells Me So” – But Will They Go?

Does the bible ever tell us to hate one another?  This is just one of the main issues presented in Dan Karslake’s “For the Bible Tells Me So,” which will be shown at the Lyric on March 22, 2008 at 3 p.m.

Admission to the documentary is free and the event is open to the general public.  The event is being sponsored by the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender, LGBT, Caucus at Virginia Tech and the Women’s Center.

This is the second showing of the film.  The film was first shown in November of 2007 to a full theater.

Kenneth Belcher, Executive Committee Co-chair, says the second showing gives people a second opportunity to see the movie if they missed it the first time.

The movie addresses issues of homosexuality and religion through a series about homosexuals who were raised in Christian homes.

Belcher says the goal of the program is to educate people and to challenge their stereotypes.  He says the film is “a more balanced piece of propaganda…and I want the film to make people to think.”  He says while the film is pro gay it is not anti-religious like some other films.

However, are Virginia Tech students willing to watch the documentary?

David Loughin, a freshman, says he would watch the film and adds that he believes the treatment of homosexuals is “honestly the single biggest downfall of the church” because they believe “their treatment is biblical” and they should exhibit lovingness even if they disagree with their lifestyle.

Mary Vogler, a freshman, says, “I am willing to see the film but I don’t think it would change how I feel, I just would like to get another perspective.”

Another student Matt Medders, a freshman, says, “I feel [the film is] good.  I would love to learn from it…. because I have gay friends.”

Belcher refers to the documentary as an “educational piece” saying “some sections will really challenge people.”

The question is will the turnout be as great as the first one, during this Easter weekend?

Well, I love Bible. I enjoy the blief in the Bible. We had thought it is impossible for others to refer to LGBT when they talked about Bible. That is most of my honest bisexual friend met at http://www.bimingle.com who are also christians. It's great to have such a discussion. I would like to hear it clear soon with the firm belief in my hearts.
