Graduation 09…Are You Prepared? Roughly 330 days, 47 weeks or to be simpler, two semesters, are all that stand in the way of now and graduation for the class of 2009. Graduation 2008 was a mere month ago, so why mention next year? More relevant topics might be an internship, a job, or a planned vacation for the summer. Shortly after graduation ended, supply and demand began anew for hotel rooms; not for orientation, fall move-in, or football games, but for graduation in 2009. New Information About VT Shootings Conflicts With University's Claims Information which conflict with prior claims by Virginia Tech regarding its proper handling of the April 16 tragedy was revealed Tuesday. Less than an hour after the settlement with the Commonwealth was reached, council to the families addressed the media on the steps of the John Marshall Courthouse in Richmond. It was learned that Bernadette Mondy--an official with the Virginia Tech Environmental, Health and Safety Services Department—sent a pair of e-mails to friends and family at a time after the shooting at West Ambler Johnston and before the shooting at Norris Hall on April 16, 2007 alerting them of the situation. |
The Planet Pundit: Media Says “News is what I say it is” It’s the old saying in the field of journalism — “news is what I say it is.” Think about it. How true is this still today? How much power do the media have? If no websites, television stations, newspapers or radio carried the weekend Virginia Tech football game, would people hear about it? It’s safe to say that the 60,000-plus witnesses at Lane Stadium would spread the results throughout Virginia, particularly in the southwest, by word of mouth, telephone, emails, blogging and text messaging. In this case, technology could possibly stand toe-to-toe with the media. But is this the same for more serious matters or stories on a national or international scale? The role of the media cannot be underestimated. Update: New April 16 Information New information was learned Tuesday afternoon after the settlement between the families and the Commonwealth regarding the events on April 16. After the settlement, attorneys Douglas Fierburg and Peter Grenier along with Joe Samaha, father of slain daughter Reema, revealed new information from their personal investigation that contradicts many of Virginia Tech’s claims that it handled the situation properly.
