PBTV: Tyrod Burns Redshirt

Just one week after announcing the fifth-year senior Sean Glennon would be the full-time starting quarterback and sophomore Tyrod Taylor would redshirt the season, Hokie head coach Frank Beamer announced at his weekly press conference that Taylor would in fact be on the field for Virginia Tech’s next game.

“I’m very hopeful that Sean has a career in the NFL and that tells you what I think of his ability,” Beamer said. “But I also think that we need as a football team what Tyrod Taylor can do for us.”

Virginia Tech lost its season opener against East Carolina University in Charlotte, N.C..  The Hokies were heavy favorites in the contest and were ranked 17th in the Associated Press Preseason poll at the time.  Glennon went 14-23 passing for 139 yards with two interceptions.  He was also sacked twice in the 27-22 loss.

“It’s very apparent to me that we need to move our launch point, in other words, where we throw the football from needs to vary.” Beamer said.  “It doesn’t need to be one place as in a drop back passing game.”

The Hokies burned Taylor’s redshirt against LSU in the second game of last season.  By stepping onto the field this season he will have no further opportunities to redshirt.

Beamer did not go into detail as to which of the players would start against Furman on Saturday. He only stated that both would be playing. He also noted that neither would be allowed to do interviews this week so they could concentrate on preparing for the game.

The Virginia Tech/Furman game is scheduled to kick off at 1:30 p.m., Saturday.
