Virginia Tech vs. Boston College Game Notes
by Tucker BloomVirginia Tech (4-1, 2-0 ACC) hosts
Boston College (4-1, 2-1 ACC) at noon. The Eagles have enjoyed regular
season success over the Hokies in each of the last three years. Tech, on
the other hand, has owned the postseason battles between the two. Will Boston
College make it a four year sweep or will no. 5 Virginia Tech continue its
quest up the rankings with another victory? Check back here throughout
the game and afterwards for notes, quotes, pictures and more.
Virginia Tech Opens with a Field Goal:
After
runs of 25 and 11 yards by Ryan Williams, the Hokie's offense stalled in the
red-zone and had to settle for a 31 yard field goal by Matt Waldron.
-Virginia
Tech leads 3-0
Virginia Tech Adds to Their Lead:
After
a three and out by Boston College, the Hokies offense came on strong, with a
key pass from Tyrod Taylor to Ryan Williams for 23 yards and finally a 24 yard
touchdown pass to Danny "Cheese" Coale. Taylor bought himself a little extra
time on the scoring throw, evading several Boston College defenders and
allowing Coale to get open.
-Virginia
Tech leads 10-0
First Quarter Notes and Thoughts
-Ryan
Williams has bounced back nicely from a relatively quiet day at Duke. He has 83
all purpose yards.
-Dave
Shinskie looks rattled. He has not completed a pass yet and is not getting the
time to accurately make his throws.
-Cody
Grimm leads the team with three tackles so far. The guy is a beast.
-Boston
College's offense is seriously struggling. After one quarter of play they have
managed just six net yards.
Williams Gets his Ninth :
It
took little time into the second quarter for Ryan Williams to get his ninth
rushing touchdown of the year. He punched it in from the one yard line after
ripping a 31 yard run down the center for the field. An acrobatic 24 yard catch
by Jarrett Boykin help set up the score as well.
-Virginia
Tech leads 17-0
Boykin Hauls One In:
It
took just seven seconds for Taylor to find Boykin in the back of the end zone
for Taylor's second scoring throw of the day. The pass was 41 yards. I'm
beginning to expect a huge gain from Boykin at least two or three times a game
now.
-Virginia Tech leads 24-0
Defense's Turn to Score:
An
ill advised pass by Boston College quarterback Dave Shinskie was intercepted by
Rashad Carmichael and taken 22 yards for a score, essentially putting this game
out of reach with 8:12 still left in the first half.
-Virginia
Tech leads 31-0
Waldron Knocks in His Second:
After
missing from 49 yards, Virginia Tech kicker Matt Waldron sent a 40 yard field
goal through the uprights to give Tech three more points to its already large
lead. The field goal was set up by an interception by Stephan Virgil.
-Virginia
Tech leads 34-0
Halftime Notes and Thoughts:
-If I
thought the Boston College offensive output was bad after the first, they have
actually managed to lose three net yards by the half, finishing with only three
yards.
-Shinskie
was briefly replaced earlier in the game, but returned in time to throw two
interceptions. He is definitely off his game. Maybe being older than Matt Ryan
has something to do with it.
-Taylor
must have a good connection with Boykin and Coale. This is the second game in a
row that he has found both of them for TD passes.
-Williams
finished the half with 138 Net Rushing Yards. He is averaging an impressive 9.2
yards per carry.
-For
those of you who doubted Taylor's passing abilities at the beginning of the
season, consider this: in the last six quarters, Taylor is 24-31 for 453 yards
and four touchdowns. Not bad.
Third Quarter Notes:
-Not
a whole lot going on in the third quarter; the Hokies seem to have come out a
bit stiff after an impressive first half.
-It
is time for the backups. Both starting quarterbacks have been replaced; Taylor
by Ju-Ju Clayton and Shinskie by Mike Marscovetra.
-Boston
College has found some offense, pushing their total from three yards to 28,
however they still have only two passing yards.
-Tech
should work on running the ball even though Ryan Williams appears to be done
for the day. Josh Oglesby is more than capable of running out the clock.
Boston College Finally Scores:
Freshman
quarterback Mike Marscovetra hit Colin Larmond for a 48 yard touchdown pass.
Larmond won the jump ball between him and Jayron Hosley and sprinted the
remaining few yards into the end zone for the score. Hosley was shaken up on
the play but walked off the field after only a minute or two.
-Virginia Tech leads 34-7
Clayton Gets a Score:
Ju-Ju
Clayton hit receiver Marcus Davis for an 80 yard touchdown. The play took just
11 seconds. The coverage seemed to be broken as Davis was wide open behind all
BC defenders.
-Virginia
Tech leads 41-7

Man did I look fondly upon the days when Matt Ryan was under center after watching that game.
