Hokies Wallop Hoos In Hockey

The Virginia Tech Hokie hockey team continued its winning ways by beating the University of Virginia Wahoos 7-1 over the weekend.
In front of a packed Roanoke Civic Center, the Hokies put forth a solid team effort with eight separate players tallying at least one point. Captain Corey Abro, John Anderson and Todd Minetree all led the team with two points apiece.
"The best [thing] about beating UVA was that they're our rival and we are sick and tired of hearing about how good UVA is and how they are better,” goalie Tony Wolak said. “Beating them 13-0 and 7-1 just says we are better and there is no doubt about it.”
The Hokies were coming off an impressive shutout victory against the Duke Blue Devils. The Wahoos were coming off a 12-3 loss against the North Carolina State Wolfpack and were in need of a win against their bitter in-state rivals.
The scoring started off quick when Abro scored on a great pass from Mitch Clark only 51 seconds into the game to put the Hokies up 1-0.
A few minutes later the Wahoo goalie, Eric Bradnam, made a great save against Hokie forward Jonathan Grace. Anderson was in place for the rebound and shot it in for the Hokies' second goal of the goal.
Soon after the second goal, the game started to get rough when a scuffle broke out in front of the Wahoo goal. This led to roughing penalties for both teams and two minutes of four on four hockey.
The Hokies took advantage of the double penalty when Brandon Boehmer scored a minute later to take the 3-0 lead.
The Wahoos did not let it get to far out of reach by getting on the scoreboard within the last minute of the first period.
Right from the beginning of the second period, the Hokies tightened things up and went on to win the game 7-1.
This win moves the Hokies to 11-2-0-2 and helps them move one step closer to securing a spot in the Southeast Conference playoffs and a number one seed in the Atlantic Coast Collegiate Hockey League playoffs.
“It’s always nice to see the team win,” longtime Hokie hockey fan Michelle Stulga said. “When that win is against UVA, it makes it so much better.”
