Photographers and Videographers Wanted!

August 23, 2010

Today, student journalists need to have a variety of skills. Here at Planet Blacksburg, we're looking for students who not only know how to write but are handy with a camera as well. Do you like photography or film? Want to show how talented you are behind the lens?

We're looking for photographers and videographers to cover a variety of events. This includes sporting events, on-campus events, off-campus events and more! If you like to take pictures or video and know how to edit using Photoshop or Final Cut Pro, we hope you'll consider joining our organization. If you don't know how to use either software, we can help you learn. So, what will your responsibilities be?

  • Attend weekly meetings which will be every Monday at 6 p.m. on the VT campus.
  • Choose which events you'd like to photograph or videotape. You can use a camera to take pictures, or you can shoot video.
  • Collaborate with writers and reporters on stories (That could mean tagging along with a reporter in the field to take pictures or video).
  • Come up with different ways to promote your pictures or video packages.

What do you get in return?

  • We provide a platform (the website) to publish your articles.
  • We promote your pictures/videos through various outlets such as Twitter and Facebook so that you gain more exposure to the community and potential employers.
  • You get your very own press pass.
  • You gain access to sporting events. Taking pictures and video on the sidelines is a completely different experience than being in the stands!
  • You will be able to create an online portfolio page that can be shown to potential employers.

Intrigued? We hope so! Shoot us an email at planet@vt.edu for more information!

Would you welcome community volunteers (non-students) or part-time students as well? If so, others may be interested. Could those intersted come occasionally, or is every week recommended/mandated?
Thanks!

Hey Erik, thanks for stopping by. One of our photographers is a part-time student, so if someone is a part-time student and is interested in working with us, that's fine. As for community volunteers who are not students, I'm unsure, but I'll get back to you on that!

The meetings for freelancers/part-time contributors are recommended. Staff writers, reporters etc., are expected to attend each weekly meeting; unless they notify their respective editor that they won't be able to attend a certain meeting in advance.
