Ladies Prepare for the Playoffs The Virginia Tech Women’s Lacrosse team wrapped up its season with a 16-5 win on Thursday against Davidson College. The Hokies now set their sights on the ACC tournament and expected first-round opponent, UNC.
Prior to the Davidson game, the Hokies had lost three straight. Lindsay Pieper, a junior who scored a career best six goals in the game, said that finishing the regular season with a win was key. “Now we can use the whole week to prepare.” Pieper said. “Since we are the underdogs, we’re preparing just for them…I’m sure they’re not even really considering us. They’re probably just thinking about their next game.” The Tar Heels regular season concludes today at defending NCAA champion Northwestern University. UNC got the better of the Hokies in the tournament last year and also in their contest this year, but Pieper is confident that the third time will be the charm. “They were third in the country at the time,” she said of this season’s game, “but we went up four goals in the first half. It shows that we can play with them and that we can do it.” For the Hokies to notch their first ACC victory of the year, they will need to avoid their recent pattern of getting outscored in the first half. Senior goaltender Carrie Hill will have her hands full with that task. UNC averages 11.8 goals per game while allowing just 7.2 per contest. Tech averages 12 goals per game but also allows an average of 11.1 goals per game. The team holds an overall record of 8-8. Should they win their first round at M&T Bank Stadium in Baltimore, Md., it will be the Hokies’ first 9-win season since the 1999-2000 campaign. |
