Saturday was the deadline for teams across the NFL to finalize their 53-man rosters.  Seven of the nine Virginia Tech players who were chosen in the draft managed to secure spots on pro teams.

Most noticeably absent from an NFL lineup this season will be Marcus Vick.  The former Hokie signal caller went undrafted but was offered a tryout with the Miami Dolphins.

Vick was waived on Saturday despite a strong final preseason performance where he fielded kicks, took snaps at quarterback and caught a touchdown pass.  Miami did sign him to its practice squad.

Jimmy Williams, the highest chosen Hokie at 37th overall, agreed to terms with the Atlanta Falcons in July.   The Falcons released former Tech QB Bryan Randall who had been competing with University of Georgia QB D.J. Shockley for the number three spot.

The Seattle Seahawks took DE Darryl Tapp in the first round (63rd) and offered a tryout to undrafted G Jason Murphy.  Tapp made the team, while Murphy was released.

The Carolina Panthers drafted and signed three Hokies; LB James Anderson (88th), TE Jeff King (155) and C Will Montgomery.  The Panthers made room for King, who is one of four tight ends on the team, by eliminating a third quarterback from the depth chart.

The Arizona Cardinals selected Jonathan Lewis in the sixth round (177th) and signed him in July.

The Cleveland Browns signed S Justin Hamilton to a four-year contract after taking him 222nd overall.  The Browns released RB Lee Suggs after a trade attempt with the New York Jets was rejected due to a failed physical.

Drafted but unsigned were OT Jimmy Martin (227th to San Diego) and RB Cedric Humes (240th to Pittsburgh).  The Steelers signed Humes to the practice squad.

Other former Virginia Tech players who were released, waived or unsigned were Chad Beasley, Dave Kadella and Garnell Wilds by Carolina, Jim Davis by Jacksonville, Tim Sandidge by St. Louis, Mike Imoh by Washington and Willie Pile by Dallas.
